Up above Repulse Bay Beach, you can’t miss The Repulse Bay apartment complex. With four connected buildings and a large rectangular hole in the center, it is a Hong Kong landmark. There is shopping and dining to take advantage of in the building’s relaxing atrium. The whole, created when the building was rebuilt in the 1980’s, was designed when the Feng Shui master informed the architects that the dragon from the mountain would need to get to the beach to drink, thus a dragon sized hole was created. I have yet to see one coming through but somehow people feel safer knowing a dragon could if it needed to!!

The shopping center is unique in Hong Kong in that it is compact and out doors; it mainly exists as an amenity to those living in The Repulse Bay. There is an expat friendly grocery store, a bookstore, a coffee shop, and bakery amongst a few other stores. The grocery store is large by Hong Kong standards and has a good selection of international as well as local foods. All of the stores surround an atrium with tables to sit outside and a waterfall and fishpond in the back, which kids love.

There is also an Asian restaurant, Spices, where residents and others flock for the outdoor terrace and good food. The food though slightly pricey is delicious and the service is excellent and family friendly, including a kid’s menu. A reservation is usually necessary. The centerpiece of the Repulse Bay is the Verandah, a restaurant that transports diners back to the 1920’s when the hotel here opened. The restaurant is formal, but even if not your cup of tea, it is worth walking through. Oh and it is good for tea although also formal. There is almost always a wedding happening here, and reservations can be tough to get. The brunch is child friendly and legendary, in portions and expense.

There are tons of families in the area, it is very safe and the kids may even make friends. Let them run around the courtyard a bit and enjoy your meal/coffee; the Repulse Bay is a great place for a break!
