Eat and Play by Chocolate Rain

Chocolate Rain is a fun, funky line of toys, jewelry and accessories that was founded in 2003 by Prudence Mak. The new flagship store, Fatina & Chefo, EAT & PLAY in PMQ, is absolutely amazing. PMQ is a creative lifestyle mall that was developed by renovating the former Police Married Quarters in Central Hong Kong. The two buildings are joined by bridges and an atrium; the complex runs along Aberdeen Street all the way from Staunton Street to Hollywood Road. PMQ opened in May, 2014 and is worth visiting as there are art exhibits, night markets and classes as well as many independent Hong Kong designer displaying their wares.

The Chocolate Rain product line is centered around Fatina, a character Prudence created in 2003, when she started her jewelry line. Fatina is Prudence’s muse of her own creation. She reminds me of the pretend friend who stands by a child’s side through thick and thin, only Prudence is creative enough to have held onto that friend into adulthood and helped her grow. The character has evolved and now has a special boy friend Chefo. He is the inspiration for the food served in the Eat and Play space at the flagship store. Prudence has proved herself around the world receiving numerous awards and has been commission for products from a diverse group including, Stella McCartney, Hong Kong Post Office, Tate Modern and Samsung.

Even before Chocolate Rain became this emporium of amazingness I bought many of my gifts for children here. The products are mostly handmade and many have a DIY quality to it that allows kids to individualize. I first found the store in 2008 when I moved to Hong Kong and immediately fell for it, it was smaller then but everywhere you looked there was something fantastic. There is something about the simplicity of the design combined with the colorful patterns that brings instant smiles!

The new flagship has just grown the brand to new heights, including teas and deserts as well as eventually meals. They host sewing, bag making and jewelry making classes. The idea behind the new store is to enter Fatima’s world, and it really is a wondrous world at that.
